Galeries Lafayette breathed new life when it arrived from Paris in 1996.
The surrounding area was a mass of building sites, so when this swish glass edifice rose it was as if the whole neighbourhood had finally taken a leap forward.
Designed by Jean Nouvel, the department store is now the place to find top names in fashion and more, including Versace, Dior and Agent Provocateur.
