Germans Go Pooch-Crazy

It seems Germans have a truly special place in their heart for their canine companions, spending over 5 billion euro per year on pampering the four-legged friends, according to thelocal.de website.

Dog lovers have turned to specialist pet boutique shops, where the top-selling items are in doggie fashion. Clothing made of luxurious fabric, collars made of jewels and crystals, as well as expensive porcelain bowls are not uncommon. Business is booming for suppliers, as German pet owners spoil their dogs with extravagant purchases.

At least the craze is not nearly as extreme as pet-obsessed Japan, where dogs and cats are more popular than children, outnumbering them by 23 million.

Got some extra euros you'd like to spend on your pooch in Berlin? Head to Koko von Knebel at Uhlandstrasse 181, Kempinski Plaza.
