Anatomy Artist Stirs up Controversy (again)
German anatomy artist, Gunther von Hagens, has just opened a new exhibition at Postbanhof entitled "The Cycle of Life". Von Hagen has gained international notoriety as his work is focused on the human anatomy with preserved human bodies on display. Bodies are stripped of their skin and the muscle and remaining tissue is preserved using Von Hagens' "plastination" method.
The original exhibition, "Body Worlds", which has been shown internationally for over 10 years, emphasized the muscular structure of bodies as they perform regular, day-to-day activities. However, this new exhibition, "The Cycle of Life", has raised more eyebrows than ever before. Media attention has focused on one particularly controversial part of the exhibition - a man and woman in a sexual pose. While many politicians and religious figures have protested at this unusual, and for some people, disturbing, way of depicting death and sex, Von Hagen stands firm that his work is strictly educational.
