Even Gay People Grow Old

Yes, it's been scientifically proven that gay people grow old too, but whereas proudly painting the town pink might be encouraged in trendy young clubs and culture hotspots what's one to do when one gets old and grey?

Behind this flippant opening, lies a serious point - one that is currently being addressed in Berlin. If you're gay and of the retiring age, do you really want to be stuck in a retirement home where your lifestyle and past could be a perpetual cause of tongue-wagging. Is there not a real danger of feeling isolated, or at the very least feel that you can't speak openly about your past - one of the great comforts of old age!

Well in the German capital the Asta Nielsen Haus (named after the Danish actress, and star of German silent cinema in the early part of the 20th century) has set a trend by becoming Europe's first old people's home solely for gay and lesbian oaps. With space for just 28 residents there is hope amongst the gay community that the idea will take off and gain common acceptance. And indeed another one is already in the planning!
