Once upon a time the minimum requirements for becoming a city santa over the Christmas period was a willingness to put on a daft costume and give 'Ho ho ho' a boisterous rendition as often as possible.

However in Berlin, where unemployment remains relatively high, the job of Santa Claus is a coveted position and city officials can afford to be demanding. Recruiters Berlin Santa Agency was reported by ITN as stating that... "The ideal candidate needs to like children, he should enjoy Christmas and should know the traditions around Christmas.

"He should know at least one Christmas carol, perhaps even a poem. Those are the minimal conditions, but we reckon that every student can fulfil those."

Castings take place in front of three strong jury, in what is sure to become the latest reality programme 'Santa Idol' (we called it first!). Lucky winners get an official certificate of Santadom.

Rumours of separate auditions for reindeers and elves have been unconfirmed.
