No Christmas Trees For Berlin Prisoners

Berlin, Germany (AHN) - Berlin's highest court ruled Monday that convicts cannot have Christmas trees in their cells out of concern that they may use them to smuggle in drugs.

The decision overturns a ruling by a lower court which allowed prisoners to decorate their cells with a tree of "no more than 50 centimeters (19.7 inches) in height."

The prison's director protested the decision to permit the trees, prompting him to file a complaint.

"The (director's) complaint correctly points out that the branches and trunk of the tree can easily be hollowed out and sealed with glue, which renders it extremely difficult to prevent the smuggling of drugs in this way," the court said.
