Actress Charlotte Rampling will head the jury at the Berlin International Film Festival in February.

The British star of films that include Swimming Pool, Lemming and The Damned will be among the panel that selects the event's top Golden Bear prize.

The festival between February 9 and 19 - the first major European film event of 2006 - is now in its 56th year.

Recent winners of the Golden Bear have included Bloody Sunday, Magnolia, The Thin Red Line and Central Station.

South African film U-Carmen e-Khayelitsha took this year's honour.

"I'm very pleased to announce we've been able to win over the fascinating woman and brilliant artist Charlotte Rampling as jury president," said Berlin Film Festival director Dieter Kosslick.

"Through her work she has come to stand for unconventional and memorable cinema."

Other members of the jury are yet to be announced.
