Urban Gardening at Tempelhof

While Berlin's iconic Tempelhof Airport may be closed for business, there's still plenty going on its former runways. Festivals take place in the summer, and many enjoy its vast spaces for weekend walks. However, a new sort of outdoor activity has sprouted up at Tempelhof recently, with the development of one of Europe's biggest urban gardens.

The Allmende Kontor garden opened in April, and is now tended to by 300 people following natural, organic principles. Now growing along the former airport runways are a huge variety of flowers, fruit and vegetables. In fact the entire garden measures in at 5000 square metres.

The urban garden will remain at Tempelhof for three years, when the entire site will be landscaped in preparation for the International Garden Show in 2017.
