Germany Advances to World Cup Quarter-Finals
This year's World Cup in South Africa has been full of surprises, but the fact that Germany's national team has advanced to the quarter finals can't be much of a shocker. Having lost only one game in the tournament so far (0-1 with Serbia), Germany has overcome Australia (4-0), Ghana (0-1), as well as England (4-1) in a historic match on Sunday 27 June.
The match, which took place in Bloemfontein, saw four goals from Germans Klose, Podolski, and Muller. England's sole point was scored by Matthew Upson, though soon after came one of the World Cup's most controversial moments so far. A shot by England's captain Frank Lampard bounced off the top of the goal dropping past the line. Fans, players, and most of all, countless cameras, saw this goal take place, though with the lack of technology in the sport of football, the linesman's eyes are the only reference and having not seen the ball go past the line, the goal was quickly disallowed.
Despite this unfortunate event, throughout the game the German team clearly showed their superior skill and there's no doubt the team deserved the win.
Germany's next game will be against Argentina on Saturday 3 July.
