The incoming head of Germany's foreign intelligence service has said Berlin has no hard evidence of stopovers in Germany by CIA planes carrying terrorist suspects.
In an interview to appear Thursday in the weekly newspaper Die Zeit, Ernst Uhrlau said, "We have no evidence, no facts. There are only the rumours." His remarks were released in advance Wednesday.
Uhrlau is shortly to take over as head of the Munich-based BND, which collects foreign intelligence. He was previously coordinator of intelligence services at the Chancellery in Berlin.
European nations are demanding an explanation from Washington of reports that the U.S. Central Intelligence Agency has been flying suspects to jails where torture is allowed, and that such planes have refuelled at airfields in Europe. | Source: Expatica | Dec.01.2005 |
