If Sally Bowles sprung from the pages of the novel that bears her name, Hafen is the first place in Berlin she would head to.
The fictional, green-fingernailed night club singer who was the inspiration for the musical Cabaret has become a symbol of decadence, which is just the image that Hafen strives to cultivate. There’s a surprising amount going on here, as the mixed clientele enjoy partying, intimate conversation and even the occasional quiz.
Open daily, it is a haven for gay and lesbian revelers but prides itself on an open door policy, welcoming one and all.
Hafen hosts theme nights throughout the winter, inviting guests to dress up as anything from bunny girls to cavemen. For some reason, there’s also a huge party there every year to mark the birthday of the Queen of The Netherlands.
