The E stands for Emil, the M stands for Max, and the venue itself stands for almost a century and a half of tradition.
Some call it E and M, some call it Leydicke, and there are probably a fair number who would like to call it home – but all agree that as one of Berlin’s oldest hostelries this bar is the one to visit for uniquely-flavoured wines and liqueurs.
In fact, from its founding in 1877 all the way to the student takeover of 1968, E&M Leydicke was more of a home brewery than a pub. Emil and Max distilled their specialities and sold them to all who cared to try a sample. And so when the students arrived, they discovered a traditional, dark and smoky bar overseen by Luzie Leydicke – a landlady not to be crossed, and one who was particularly tough on guests who did not drink enough.
Luzie died in 1980 but her legend and that of her family bar live on, and continue to attract locals and tourists thirsting for a taste of old Berlin.
