Heinrich Zille was not in fact a Berliner, having been born near Dresden in 1858. However, the city took him to its heart and made him an honorary citizen, in recognition of his work with the Academy of Art. If you're browsing for souvenirs to take home, you will probably come across reproductions of Zille's work, which depicts the ordinary life of everyday folk in Berlin's tenement blocks. His images were quickly taken up by social movements, because they captured the increasing poverty that Berlin's workers experienced in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. Recently renovated, the museum houses the originals of many of Zille's drawings, photographs and prints.
