Kathe Kollwitz was an artist touched deeply by the effects of human suffering, either through poverty, illness, personal loss or on the battlefields. She became known for her bold statements of peace and her fearless depictions of what it genuinely meant for a real human being to suffer - which she presented as drawings, sculpture, prints and woodcuts. This museum was opened in 1986, as both a memorial to Kollwitz and tribute to the subjects closest to her heart. Now it attracts visitors looking to combine the experience of her work with another famous Berlin artistic landmark next door - the Literaturhaus.
