Nikolaikirche

|
Or, maybe the oldest church in Berlin. There is some rivalry over this claim, between St Nicholas' and the nearby Church of Our Lady. But given that both were built over a period of a decade or more in the early 13th century, it's impossible to say which actually opened for prayer first.
St Nicholas' actually began life as a stone building with a fortress-style tower attached. It did not acquire its two spires, an iconic image of Berlin for many, until much later. That it is still standing at all is something of a miracle, and it has been restored often as the ravages of war and time have taken their toll over almost a thousand years.
Exhibits include a 600-year-old font of bronze, and a comparatively modern pulpit, dating as it does from 1714. |
