On May 8 1945, the German Army surrendered and effectively ended the war in Europe. Increasingly depleted and demoralised by battling on both eastern and western fronts, the formal and unconditional surrender of the Wehrmacht was signed here in what is now the German-Russian Museum at Berlin-Karlshorst. It is a unique museum in many ways. For a start, it is a work of German and Russian co-operation. Both nations are aware of and have contributed to a frank and clear-eyed analysis of 1945 and the years immediately before and afterwards. Open Tuesday to Sunday, the museum hosts a permanent exhibition and often has special events or temporary displays.
